Introduction to Scent Detection

Scent detection is great for fun and enrichment!
Accessible to dogs of all abilities – it’s low-impact and self-paced so that every dog gets to have fun the way they want to!

It can be done indoors or outdoors. It’s great for dogs that prefer a generous amount of personal space, and it’s perfect for humans who are social distancing during COVID-19.

This is a beginner level class, no pre-requisites to attend.
It is indoors, with a maximum of 4 dog/handler teams, and all handlers must wear a face mask at all times while indoors.

The course includes:
-The taste test
-Developing an alert
-Imprinting with scent articles in a scent lab
-Handouts with homework assignments and
-A scent kit

You will learn:
-How to build a scent Lab
-Indications/alerts
-Odour hygiene to prevent cross contamination
-Setting your dog up for success
-Backchaining (why and how)
-Potential applications of scent detection

Registration is for one handler and one dog, and INCLUDES a scent kit.
$124 for the 4 classes with Scent kit
$89 for the 4 classes without a scent kit (please send a separate email to be invoiced without a scent kit)

Scent kit includes the 6 essential oils used in CKC Scent Detection:
-Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens)
-Pine (Pinus sylvestris)
-Anise (Pimpinella anisum)
-Clove (Eugenia caryophyllatta)
-Birch (Betula lenta)
-Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens)

 

Scent kit also includes the articles used for WSDA competitions:
-Red Kong
-Gun oil and Catnip
-Scent Squirrel
AND
-a set of pliers/tweezers or hemostats
-3 small metal containers for hides
-2 plastic tube containers for hides
